Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he had made from these sales in order to set up a public information office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. It may seem like a small gesture, but sending a Christmas gift card can be just the same as sending one.
There are many different types of cards you could send. In the late 1840s, a German printer produced the first Christmas cards in America. They were very costly and many people couldn’t afford them. Louis Prang, a Boston-based lithographer, made the first Christmas card commercially in the United Kingdom. This process allowed for a very realistic image of the holiday, and allowed for the production of five million cards in a single year.
