Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. As a result, the Post Office has evolved into a business that allows people to send and receive cards without having to worry about how to reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are many types of cards you can send. In the United States, Christmas cards were first produced by a German printer in the late 1840s. They were expensive and not affordable for most people. Louis Prang, a Boston lithographer, created the first commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom in 1915. This allowed for a more realistic representation of the holiday and allowed for five million cards to be produced in one year.
