In the year 1843, Henry Cole, the first man to sell Christmas cards in London, sold them for one shilling. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. The United States’ first Christmas card was printed in 1840 by a German printer. They were expensive and not affordable for most people. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a more realistic representation of the holiday and allowed for five million cards to be produced in one year.
