Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. As a result, the Post Office has evolved into a business that allows people to send and receive cards without having to worry about how to reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. Christmas cards were first printed in the United States by a German printer in late 1840s. They were very expensive, and most people could not afford them. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
