Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. The money he made from these sales was used to open a public records office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. The United States’ first Christmas card was printed in 1840 by a German printer. They were very costly and many people couldn’t afford them. In the United Kingdom, the first commercial Christmas card was made in 1915 by a Boston lithographer named Louis Prang. This process allowed for a very realistic picture of the holiday and allowed the production of five millions cards in one year.
