Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. It’s a small gesture but sending a Christmas greeting card can be as important as sending one.
There are several types of cards that you can send. In the late 1840s, a German printer produced the first Christmas cards in America. They were very costly and many people couldn’t afford them. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This process allowed for a very realistic image of the holiday, and allowed for the production of five million cards in a single year.
