Henry Cole was the first man to sell Christmas card in London in 1843. He sold them for one shilling. He used the money he had made from these sales in order to set up a public information office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. And while it’s a small gesture, sending a Christmas card can be just as important as sending one!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. In the United States, Christmas cards were first produced by a German printer in the late 1840s. They were very costly and many people couldn’t afford them. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
