Henry Cole, a Boston-based lithographer, is believed to have invented Christmas cards. By the 1880s, he was producing more than five million cards annually. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. These cards had become the most loved gift for family members and friends by the end of the 1800s. There are many styles to choose from so you’re sure to find the one that suits your needs.
Christmas cards were traditionally purchased by friends and family. They are now sold for several pounds. They are rare and can fetch thousands. Even the original, first-generation card is considered an incredibly special piece of history and worth the price. You might even be surprised to learn that one of Sir Henry’s earliest cards sold for over PS22,000 a year. In fact, today, you can buy a first-generation Christmas card for a few thousand pounds.
