Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. It’s a small gesture but sending a Christmas greeting card can be as important as sending one.
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. The United States’ first Christmas card was printed in 1840 by a German printer. They were very costly and many people couldn’t afford them. Louis Prang, a Boston-based lithographer, made the first Christmas card commercially in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a more realistic representation of the holiday and allowed for five million cards to be produced in one year.
