Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he had made from these sales in order to set up a public information office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. It’s a small gesture but sending a Christmas greeting card can be as important as sending one.
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. In the United States, Christmas cards were first produced by a German printer in the late 1840s. They were extremely expensive and could not be afforded by most people. In the United Kingdom, the first commercial Christmas card was made in 1915 by a Boston lithographer named Louis Prang. This process allowed for a very realistic image of the holiday, and allowed for the production of five million cards in a single year.
