Henry Cole, a Boston-based lithographer, is believed to have invented Christmas cards. By the 1880s, he was producing more than five million cards annually. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. By the late 1800s, these cards had become the most popular gift for family and friends. There are many styles to choose from so you’re sure to find the one that suits your needs.
Traditionally, Christmas cards were purchased by family members and friends. Today, they can fetch several pounds. Rare cards can fetch thousands of dollars. Even the first-generation card is considered a rare piece of history, and well worth the price. One of Sir Henry’s earliest cards was sold for more than PS22,000 each year. In fact, today, you can buy a first-generation Christmas card for a few thousand pounds.
