Henry Cole, a Boston lithographer, is credited for inventing Christmas cards. He was producing over five million cards per year by the 1880s. His cards used a new process, called chromolithography. This allows for realistic detail. By the late 1800s, these cards had become the most popular gift for family and friends. There are so many different styles to choose from that you’re bound to find one that suits your needs.
Christmas cards were traditionally purchased by friends and family. Today, they are sold for several pounds. Rare cards can fetch thousands of dollars. Even the original, first-generation card is considered an incredibly special piece of history and worth the price. You might even be surprised to learn that one of Sir Henry’s earliest cards sold for over PS22,000 a year. You can still buy a first-generation holiday card for as low a thousand pounds today.
