In the year 1843, Henry Cole, the first man to sell Christmas cards in London, sold them for one shilling. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. It’s a small gesture but sending a Christmas greeting card can be as important as sending one.
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. In the late 1840s, a German printer produced the first Christmas cards in America. They were expensive and not affordable for most people. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a more realistic representation of the holiday and allowed for five million cards to be produced in one year.
