Henry Cole, an American lithographer, is the one who invented Christmas cards. He produced over five million Christmas cards per year by 1880s. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. By the late 1800s, these cards had become the most popular gift for family and friends. There are so many different styles to choose from that you’re bound to find one that suits your needs.
Christmas cards were traditionally purchased by friends and family. They are now sold for several pounds. Rare cards can fetch thousands of dollars. Even the original first-generation card can be considered a unique piece of history and is well worth the price. One of Sir Henry’s earliest cards was sold for more than PS22,000 each year. You can still buy a first-generation holiday card for as low a thousand pounds today.
