In the year 1843, Henry Cole, the first man to sell Christmas cards in London, sold them for one shilling. The money he made from these sales was used to open a public records office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. Christmas cards were first printed in the United States by a German printer in late 1840s. They were very expensive, and most people could not afford them. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
