Henry Cole, a Boston lithographer, is credited for inventing Christmas cards. In the 1880s, he produced more than five millions cards annually. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. These cards were a popular gift for both family and friends in the late 1800s. There are many options to choose from, so you’re sure that one will suit your needs.
Traditionally, Christmas cards were purchased by family members and friends. Today, they are sold for several pounds. Some cards are extremely rare and can fetch thousands. Even the original, first-generation card is considered an incredibly special piece of history and worth the price. One of Sir Henry’s earliest cards was sold for more than PS22,000 each year. Today, you can purchase a first-generation Christmas Card for as low as a few thousand pounds.
