Henry Cole, who was the first person to sell Christmas cards in London in 1843, sold them one shilling. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office has grown to be a business that allows people sending and receiving cards without having to think about how to reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. In the United States, Christmas cards were first produced by a German printer in the late 1840s. They were expensive and not affordable for most people. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a more realistic representation of the holiday and allowed for five million cards to be produced in one year.
