Henry Cole, who was the first person to sell Christmas cards in London in 1843, sold them one shilling. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office was born. It allows people to send and get cards without worrying about how they will reply. It may seem like a small gesture, but sending a Christmas gift card can be just the same as sending one.
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. In the late 1840s, a German printer produced the first Christmas cards in America. They were extremely expensive and could not be afforded by most people. Louis Prang, an American lithographer from Boston, created the first ever commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
