Henry Cole, a Boston lithographer, is credited for inventing Christmas cards. In the 1880s, he produced more than five millions cards annually. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. These cards were the most popular gift for friends and family in the late 1800s. There are so many different styles to choose from that you’re bound to find one that suits your needs.
Christmas cards were traditionally purchased by friends and family. They are now sold for several pounds. Rare cards can fetch thousands of dollars. Even the original, first-generation card is considered an incredibly special piece of history and worth the price. It might surprise you to learn that Sir Henry’s first cards sold for more than PS22,000 per year. Today, you can purchase a first-generation Christmas Card for as low as a few thousand pounds.
