In the year 1843, Henry Cole, the first man to sell Christmas cards in London, sold them for one shilling. He used the money he had made from these sales in order to set up a public information office. The Post Office has grown to be a business that allows people sending and receiving cards without having to think about how to reply. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. Christmas cards were first printed in the United States by a German printer in late 1840s. They were very expensive, and most people could not afford them. Louis Prang, a Boston-based lithographer, made the first Christmas card commercially in the United Kingdom. This process allowed for a very realistic picture of the holiday and allowed the production of five millions cards in one year.
