Henry Cole, who was the first person to sell Christmas cards in London in 1843, sold them one shilling. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are many different types of cards you could send. The United States’ first Christmas card was printed in 1840 by a German printer. They were expensive and not affordable for most people. Louis Prang, a Boston lithographer, created the first commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom in 1915. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
