Henry Cole, who was the first person to sell Christmas cards in London in 1843, sold them one shilling. He used the money from these sales to establish a public record bureau. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are several different types of cards that can be sent. The United States’ first Christmas card was printed in 1840 by a German printer. They were extremely expensive and could not be afforded by most people. Louis Prang, a Boston-based lithographer, made the first Christmas card commercially in the United Kingdom. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
