Henry Cole, a Boston-based lithographer, is believed to have invented Christmas cards. In the 1880s, he produced more than five millions cards annually. His cards were produced using a new process called “chromolithography”, which allows for realistic detail as well as coloration. These cards were a popular gift for both family and friends in the late 1800s. There are so many different styles to choose from that you’re bound to find one that suits your needs.
Christmas cards were traditionally purchased from family members or friends. They can be purchased for several pounds today. Rare cards can fetch thousands of dollars. Even the first-generation original card is considered a special piece of history that is worth the price. You might even be surprised to learn that one of Sir Henry’s earliest cards sold for over PS22,000 a year. You can still buy a first-generation holiday card for as low a thousand pounds today.
