Henry Cole, the first man in London to sell Christmas cards, sold them for 1 shilling in 1843. He used the money he earned from these sales to set up a public record office. The Post Office evolved into a business that allows people send and receive cards without worrying about how to respond. Even though it is a small gesture to send a Christmas card, it can be just as important!
There are many types of cards you can send. Christmas cards were first printed in the United States by a German printer in late 1840s. They were extremely expensive and could not be afforded by most people. Louis Prang, a Boston lithographer, created the first commercial Christmas card in the United Kingdom in 1915. This allowed for a very realistic holiday image and allowed for five millions cards to be made in one year.
